San Marcos Youth Baseball and Softball Families,                               May 21,2020

After thoroughly considering the possibilities for resuming play, the San Marcos Youth Baseball Softball Association Board has decided to put our families first and cancel the remainder of the Spring season. We discussed what play would look like if we decided to resume this summer.  For example:

  • How terrible we all would feel if a child in our league, or a family member there to watch, were to get sick and not recover.  Would it be worth the risk to play a handful of games?

  • Who would enforce the multitude of new “social distancing” rules and regulations at the game fields and at practices? (To view a sample of these regulations please visit http://usssa.com/coronavirus

  • Typically, the spring season would be ending for most kids at this time, what would it mean to resume play during the hottest months of the year?

  • Would there be time to re-organize teams since some families will continue play and some won’t?

  • Most area recreational leagues have already cancelled their spring season. Since we partner with many of those cities, would we even have opposing teams to play?

We hope this gives you a glimpse into our conversation. Please know that we didn’t take the decision lightly.  We are on the SMYBSA board because we love these sports and of course would want nothing more than to be able to have our baseball/softball community back in action.  However, it’s just not our time right now.  We are in discussions about a possible fall season but only time will tell.

In addition, we understand that some are feeling the financial struggles that have come with this pandemic. Therefore, we are currently determining if we can afford partial reimbursements given that uniforms were already purchased, we paid umpires and had other expenses for the games that have been played, and we have made field improvements, including the newly constructed batting cages at the Ramon Lucio complex.

If you are able and willing to waive your reimbursement and contribute the funds as a donation to the league, we would be extremely appreciative. However, we also understand if you need the reimbursement, please feel free to make your request to smybsa.web@gmail.com

As always, we thank you for playing with SMYBSA. We appreciate your understanding.

Sincerely,

San Marcos Youth Baseball Softball Association (SMYBSA) Board
